Terms of Reference
To approve:
1. Policies and practices to stimulate research and impact programmes and initiatives.
2. Strategies to influence the research policy and strategy of key national and international agencies, the government and funders, including responses to sector consultations.
3. Strategies to support research culture.
4. Strategies to support the career development, training, and assessment, of research staff, including relevant action plans relating to the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment and other related sector initiatives.
5. Activity of the University’s institutional interdisciplinary research structures, including recommendations from the Spotlights Steering Group.
6. The terms of reference, nominations for membership, delegated authority, and priorities of sub-Committees.

7. [To the Senate] The Research Strategy in support of the University’s Strategy.
8. [To the Academic Resourcing Committee, with the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research)] Considerations and findings of the Committee to aid in aligning resource allocation with research strategy.
9. [To the Senate and in consultation with the relevant Faculty Committees] The establishment, disestablishment and continuation of University Research Centres in line with the University’s research strategy.

10. Key research and impact items from Faculty Research Committees.
11. Reports on the research performance, research quality and the generation of research income of the University and its constituent parts, to identify areas where improvements could be made, where there are significant risks and/or where new opportunities may be pursued.
12. Reports on the University’s research communications strategy and related activities.
13. Reports on the University’s research culture and environment, including reports from the Research Culture Forum and the National Centre for Research Culture (NCRC), and from the Open Research Group.
14. Reports from the Postgraduate Research Subcommittee on progress towards the implementation of the Postgraduate Research Strategy.
15. Reports on research governance and assurance, including reports from the Research Governance and Ethics Committee.
16. Reports on the management and mitigation of strategic research risks as set out in the relevant risk register.
17. Reports on other matters referred by the Senate.
